False / genuine? Amethyst is very rarely counterfeited. Here you can read more about how to identify a real amethyst.
Raw or tumbled? Amethyst can be used in all forms. It is completely harmless, but a rule of thumb that can be good to keep in mind is that tumbled and polished are more comfortable to wear than a cluster or a raw stone. Raw stones and clusters can also be quite sharp and do better on a shelf or in a bowl. In clusters, it is not uncommon for the outermost crystals to come loose. These can be used separately.
Facts about Amethyst
Amethyst is a purple variant of the mineral quartz that usually comes from Brazil, Uruguay and Madagascar but is found almost all over the world, including Sweden.
Amethyst forms natural crystal tips that sit in dense collections and are available as geodes, clusters but also raw pieces, crystals, tumbled and polished.
Brandberg Amethyst
Brandberg amethyst is a variant of amethyst that is mined by hand in Goboboseb 35 km west of Brandberget in Namibia and is named after the area. The crystals are close to the earth's surface and are dug up by hand. Brandberg amethysts are characterized by the fact that they are usually very clear and contain both amethyst and smoky quartz.
Pink amethyst
A new site has been found in Patagonia with a pink variant of amethyst. The pink variant is still so new and it has not yet been identified what causes the pink tone, but it is probably "contaminants" of iron. There are divided opinions about whether pink amethyst should heal just this or whether it should be called something with "quartz" instead. We have chosen to call it pink amethyst.
nice to know
The name of the amethyst is said to mean "drunk" and in ancient times it was considered that if you drank wine from a glass of amethyst, you did not get drunk. It would have been fantastic, but we have not tested whether this statement is true 😊
