Nairobi. Most things are a bit chaotic here - times are never kept, meetings are often missed, the car mechanics are a family in of themselves - if they don’t accidentally happen to crash your car when you have it in for repair at the workshop, at least they will not be finished when they said they would be. But they are not likely later than 2-3 months behind schedule, ever. Almost.
So - If you hand in your car, expect that you will have to cancel or postpone that date with your lover or your trip to your good friends in Nanyuki - that car of yours is not going nowhere anytime soon.
In Stockholm things are well organized but if you start crying or laughing in the street, people will wonder what kind of maniac you are and find the situation embarrassing. If you do that in Nairobi, people will help you, laugh with you or find you interesting.
And speaking of laughing. Today I experienced something new. Where we live, they are building everywhere. My dog Toro and I took a morning walk and I lifted him up and carried him under my arm past the worst parts of dust and rubbish; because he's small and he's my furry baby and I care about his health.
A woman saw us, said something in Swahili and pointed us out while laughing loudly an unconcealed. All the workers started laughing too. I have no idea at what. Perhaps they thought we looked funny. Or that I was an idiot carrying my little fluffy dog. Or at something completely different.
In any case, I got to experience how people from other countries feel when everyone is staring and you can’t understand a single word. It was truly refreshing! ❤️
Isn’t that why I travel - because the little Swedish bubble is too small and seldom humbling? Yes, it sure is! And it also reminds me why I need to learn Swahili really soon.
